Content for SEO: What is it and how to create it

You may hear the term "SEO content" discussed in marketing meetings if you're relatively new to search marketing.

Three questions are addressed in this beginner's guide:

SEO content: what does it mean?

How does SEO content differ?

The importance of developing a strategy for SEO content

Please leave a comment if you have any questions about SEO content creation strategies I didn't address here. I will reply to the comments here or in a future article.

Here we go!

SEO content: what does it mean?

Here are the components of SEO content marketers use to explain what they mean:

“SEO” stands for search engine optimization, which entails optimizing a website so that the search engines will be able to find it easily.

In this context, "content" refers to any information that exists on a website or can be accessed via a website (more on different types of content below).

The goal of SEO content is to attract search engine traffic, so it combines these two concepts.

This is not the definitive guide to optimizing your content for search engines; that's another post altogether. However, here's a quick rundown of what you should do to optimize your website:

Researching keywords before you start writing is the best way to generate traffic through search. Thus, you can write about topics (or find keyword niches!) that people are already searching for information about – so you can target keywords for which there is already a high search volume.

Using keywords strategically in your content is the key to maximum searchability (find out more in our on-page SEO guide).

It is important that you organize your content logically on your site, not only for SEO purposes, but also to make it easier for visitors to find other relevant content.

Make sure your new content is visible by sharing it on social networks and establishing links (both within your site and from outside sites).

Intentions quickie

Your results are likely to suffer if you focus only on search engine traffic. In order to please both the search engines (which will reward you with high rankings over time) and potential customers and return visitors, you need to offer value above and beyond search engine optimization. You shouldn't create “thin” content that gets clicks but doesn't offer any added value to search engine users. A site that promotes "thin," low-value content is at risk of being penalized by Google; its bounce rate and conversion rate are also likely to be high.

Search engine optimization content types

The following are examples of SEO content:

Choosing the right product page is essential for any retail e-commerce site. A good product page can also serve as a PPC landing page.

A blog is an easy way to create SEO content on a regular basis. The content on a blog is generally more engaging, and they're more likely to attract links than product pages, so they're a great way to gain some authority. It is important to remember that blogs are extremely flexible, and you can use them to host any of the following types of content.

In most newspaper-style websites, you will find articles, interviews, or feature pieces.

  • Lists – Essentially, lists are just articles, but framing them as lists (such as "10 Ways to Lower Your Energy Bill" or "101 Things I Hate About Google") makes them easier to scan. It is also apparent that these types of titles are more clickable when found in search results or social media feeds, and social signals have an impact on SEO as well.
  • Guides – A guide is a longer piece of content that explains how to do something in detail. (Guides are often split up into multiple web pages, but it's a good idea to let users view long content as a single page as well if they prefer.) You can post a full guide on your website, or you can post a summary or excerpt, asking visitors to register to read the complete guide. The registration wall may be a good way to generate leads, but it will likely reduce the amount of SEO traffic that guides can receive.
  • Video - Video content is generally less common than text on the web; therefore, it is easier to rank on the first page for a competitive keyword if you create a video rather than an article. Video tutorials can be a great way to attract and reach an audience, depending on what type of business you run. Consider making a video that illustrates a process related to your business - for instance, a plumber can demonstrate how to unclog a sink. (For video SEO tips, see here.)
  • Large-format images that contain a lot of information (often in the form of graphs or charts) on a single subject can get a lot of page views and links, so infographics are popular. There is, however, some content embedded in the image that can't be read by search engines as text, so it's important to optimize the rest of the page. Here are 5 free infographic templates that you can use to get started.
  • There are times when pictures are more important than text – say when showcasing what all the stars wore to the Oscars. Slideshows – A slideshow is a way to display a series of related images. In this case, SEO is also important for title, captions, image file names, and so on, since the search engines have less to read.
  • People use Google more than dictionaries to look up terms. In case you work in a specialized industry, you may want to take advantage of a well-organized glossary that can help you generate some search traffic. Think cooking terms, medical terms, fashion terms, architectural terms...
  • There are a number of ways to categorize websites. For example, if the author of a perfume blog created a directory of local perfume shops, it would be organized by major department stores.

SEO content can be broken down into a variety of types, but the possibilities are endless.

SEO Content Strategy: How to Create It

You need a more systematic approach to SEO content creation if you have been creating content haphazardly, hoping for something to rank.

If you want to define a solid SEO content strategy, you need to follow four steps.

Decide what you want to accomplish

In order to begin creating content for your website, determine your goals first. Are you looking to generate sales? Do you monetize your website via ads so that all you need to do is increase visitors and return readers?

You should optimize your product pages for both search and conversion if you are primarily trying to drive product sales. It might be best if your blog isn't entirely self-promotional, but it can be helpful blog content that illustrates how and when to use your products, linking to relevant pages (but don't let it be entirely self-promotional).

It's important to focus on rich content if you operate your site as an advertising site and you're looking for new readers via search (such as long-form articles or videos that are informative, entertaining, or both) with “stickiness” (content that keeps visitors on your site longer or encourages them to return) if you're trying to attract new readers.).

Audience considerations

Develop personas that represent your ideal site visitors and customers to help you understand your audience. Surveys and analytics software can help you do this. Consider what types of content those personas would be interested in, then develop marketing personas.

Creating high-level white papers that can be downloaded and saved for later reading might be a good idea for a B2B website that targets C-level executives.

Using less text and more images and video will be more effective if your business targets teens and tweens. Your site should also be mobile-friendly.

Plan your editorial schedule

A schedule that outlines when and what type of content you will publish is an editorial calendar. Once you know who you want to target and why, you can create a schedule for publishing new content. If you have a blog, creating new content on a regular basis will help you keep your schedule (and prevent you from scrambling to think of new content at the last minute if you don't).

An editorial calendar can be created and adhered to in the following ways:

  • Setting up reminders so authors get notified when deadlines are approaching is another way to use Outlook (or Google Calendar).
  • Create ongoing features - For instance, a food blog might post a meatless recipe every Monday. In addition, many blogs do link roundups once every week (including this one). You can create a category page for each ongoing feature, so visitors will be able to find your Meatless Monday recipes or link roundups in one location.
  • Videos and infographics often require multiple rounds of editing and are more difficult to optimize for search engine results, so give yourself plenty of lead time when creating more complex content.
  • Plan out your schedules a year in advance, but don't try to plan out a year in advance if you won't be able to keep them. If your marketing goals, budgets or staff change after a few months, your schedule is likely to get derailed.

Re-evaluate and analyze

Stay on top of your analytics. Using tools and website graders, you can evaluate your SEO content regularly to see what works and what doesn't. Regularly evaluate your SEO content using both content audits and SEO audits (or even a full site audit). Among the best measures of success and engagement are page views, links, comments (for blog posts and other types of content), and social shares (for example, likes, tweets, etc.). Your analysis should focus on two things:

  • Look for patterns in your success so you can repeat them. Are videos popular with your visitors? Then make more of them! Adjust your editorial calendar so you can focus more on those content types going forward.
  • Get back into older SEO content and update and improve it - If you tried to optimize an article for one keyword, but it is generating more traffic for another variation, go back in and re-optimize it. If that keyword is included in the title, for example, you might be able to significantly increase traffic.
  • Make sure your website is optimized for Google and search engines by regularly assessing it as a whole and on individual pages. To get started, take a look at our free SEO and online presence checker.
